What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Modern Clinical Hypnotherapy utilises the clinically-proven techniques of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) and other cognitive approaches.

When these approaches are combined with a hypnotic trance state it empowers clients to make significant positive changes, such as changing restrictive thought patterns and resolving undesirable and unwanted patterns of behaviour.

Hypnotic trance is a normal and natural method of altering someone’s state of consciousness. During this trance state the subconscious part of your mind (where all our past experiences and emotions are stored) is more receptive and this allows beneficial change to be induced.

About Clinical Hypnotherapy in Edinburgh

Hypnosis is a very pleasant and relaxing experience and contrary to what we may believe by watching stage or television shows, you do not lose awareness or control, in fact during trance our awareness is heightened. There is no such thing as a ‘hypnotised’ feeling, the experience is different for each person.

At all times you will be encouraged you to respond within your own comfort zone into a state of deep relaxation and it should always be remembered that at all times you remain in control, and if at any time wish the session to be terminated then you will be perfectly capable of doing so.

After the session you will be always be returned to a full waking state.

What to Expect in a Hypnotherapy Session

The first step is to book an initial consultation. This is a free service lasting about half an hour. It is an opportunity to meet me and to describe your problem. I will take some personal details, such as address, contact details, plus a few details of your general health. I will then explain how the subconscious part of the brain is influencing and affecting the presenting problem.

I will also explain how Clinical Hypnotherapy can help your specific problem and provide an assessment of how much improvement you can expect and how many sessions may be required. If the problem is complex then progress will be jointly reviewed at pre-agreed stages of the treatment.

For therapy to have any value you need to have trust and confidence in your therapist and feel comfortable in the environment that you will be working in. You will be given an opportunity to book a future session at the end of this meeting should you wish to.

Subsequent Sessions take approximately 50 minutes to one hour. On arriving for your first full session I will need to find out necessary information about you and your problem in more detail and will take notes.

At the first treatment session, rating scales may be used in order to benchmark your presenting symptom pattern and cognitive patterns. These take the form of a list of questions, which will be re-examined in future sessions in order to monitor your progress through the therapeutic process.

The next stage is hypnosis. Using my voice I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation by using words, a soothing tone, mental imagery and various exercises and techniques (such as deep breathing) to induce a pleasant, relaxed state. We will then access your thoughts and feelings that have been causing the issue that you are faced with. It is important to remember that you will be aware at all times and in full control.

About Your Hypnotherapist

Hello, my name is Elliott and I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist and the owner of the Edinburgh Hypnosis Practice. I qualified with the Manchester College of Coaching and Hypnotherapy (MCCH). This training encompasses Hypnotherapy as well as techniques in Psychotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT).

I’ve been through my own personal course of hypnotherapy and that means I can really understand what it’s like for my clients to experience this process, and I use my knowledge to create the best possible therapeutic relationship. As a modern Clinical Hypnotherapist, I use a goal-directed approach to therapy where the time is spent finding the solution rather than focusing on the problem.

I work as a hypnotherapist because I really enjoy working together with people to help them feel more positive and gain control over their lives. I have found that hypnotherapy is an extremely fast and effective way to bring about long-term results.

I adhere to a strict code of ethics and attend regular supervision meetings to ensure that I continue to offer the best service to my client base. I am also fully covered by professional indemnity insurance.
